What can I do to cure my mental golf issues?

September 1st, 2010

Ok, so I have been playing golf for a little over a year and a half and I have never had a membership to a course until this year so I often would play about once a week or once every other week. The last round I played I played awful I shot like a 93 or something and I realized my biggest handicap is my mental game. I hit the ball pretty straight and when I hit a bad shot it isn’t a place where I can’t usually excape I will just hit it into the rough or miss a green or whatever, I don’t hit huge slices into the trees or anything like that. I usually can make 90% good shots, for example if I’m on a par 5 and I hit a drive and it just misses the fairway but the approach has to go over water and I think about it too much and I will either chose extra club and sail the green by a mile or hit it fat or thin and it goes into the water resulting in a double bogey. This is every round I play, I will hit a bunch of good shots but then just one bad shot will ruin the entire hole for me and then my confidence goes down which leads to more bad shots. Is there anything I can do to fix this, like any sorts of drills that will allow me to just hit the ball well like I know I am capable of doing? I study the golf swing and listen to instructors points and I don’t have any of the problems most amateurs have my glaring golf weakness is my mind. Please help if you guys know anything that can help and what may cause it. Is it just because I haven’t played enough to gain the confidence in my shot making abilities?
The par 5 example was not intended to be an example of poor course management I am good at that I play smart I think I just overthink shots. It would probably be my 3rd shot after laying up that I am going for that par 5. Sorry for not being clear

May 29th, 2010

I golf and I play baseball, but I just have a natural golf swing, that is why I started playing golf, I have been working a lot on coming down on the ball when I swing but I still upper cut sometimes because that is just what is natural to me. Any one got some drills to help me?

do hands, arms, upper body, or legs power the golf swing?

May 17th, 2010

I have been playing golf for over 40 years, very inconsistently. i often hit iron shots fat, my tendency is to hit irons on the outer 1/2 of the face (nearer the toe than the sweet spot) and most often pushed. My background is baseball which i believe causes incorrect hand and wrist movement through the golf swing. Baseball is a much "whippier" movement, snapping wrists through impact, driven by the hands. Wrist snapping through golf impact is a disaster.

Golf on the other hand from what i can gather is much less about hands and more about using upper body rotation to power the swing.

Are there any good videos, drills i can do to reinforce the correct hand/wrist movement?
